The Art of Songwriting

The Art Of Songwriting

People often ask me where I get my inspiration from for the songs that I write. The answer to that is both easy and hard to explain. The simple answer? Life. We all experience life in a way that seems so unique to ourselves that we sometimes think there is no possible way that anyone could understand what we’re going through. We experience a complex array of emotions that helps us deal with all that life throws our way. We use anger when we witness injustice. Frustration when we encounter things we have no power to change. We feel love for those people we hold most dear and we have sorrow for when they are no longer with us. All of these things we have in common yet we experience them so differently.  Anyone who has lived and breathed on this earth has the ability to write a song.

A song is story and we all have one to tell. When we do this something amazing happens. We realize that we aren’t alone. That somewhere in this crazy world there is someone just like us who has walked the same path and can relate to how we feel. This is essential to the human condition. We rely on that human connection to bring us together and make us feel a part of something bigger. This is where the art of songwriting comes into play.

A successful songwriter takes these emotions and gives them a voice. Many of us have difficulty expressing how we feel. Songs are a way that we can do this. Picture the person you love the most, you want to tell them just how much they mean to you but you cant find the words. Use a song!

When it comes to me personally I like to write about what I know. This, however, does not always mean experiencing a situation first hand. It is important, especially when you are the one with the voice, to listen to the world around you. Sometimes people in your life have a story that needs to be told. Sometimes its the story of a stranger. One thing I know for certain is that an audience can smell a fake from a mile away so authenticity is always my number one. And just like we aren’t alone in life, neither should we be in songwriting.

Collaboration is a fundamental part when it comes to writing a great song. Having an outside perspective can sometimes shed light on a situation that might have otherwise been overlooked. Sometimes its nice just to have someone with a stronger vocabulary. I was brought up to believe that you should surround yourself with people who inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Find people that challenge you and make sure that you challenge them.

Songwriting is like any art, you never really perfect it. I am always striving to find ways to be better and I have noticed this to be true even among the seasoned pros. I have been lucky enough to be in rooms with world class writers and no matter how many hits they have under their belt they still work hard every day to be better than yesterday. Always learning and pushing the limits of what can be done with the english language. There is so much beauty in the world and even amongst thorns there are roses.

Your song can start here, right now. We all have a story to tell…. I want to hear yours
